Restructuring Our Grass-Cutting Service – Keeping OutServe Reliable & Sustainable

At OutServe, I’ve always tried to offer something a little different from a traditional, ad-hoc grass-cutting service.

For me, it isn't simply about turning up, cutting the grass and moving on to the next property. I want OutServe to provide a professional, reliable and well-organised service that customers can depend on throughout the season.

As we move towards the latter part of the 2026 grass-cutting season, I’ve made the difficult decision to restructure our grass-cutting round. This means reducing the size of the round, while some customers who remain will see a small price adjustment.

I wanted to explain openly why these changes are necessary.

A Seasonal Service – Not an Ad-Hoc Grass Cut

Our regular grass-cutting service is best thought of as a seasonal maintenance subscription.

When a customer joins the round, I reserve regular capacity throughout the grass-cutting season to maintain their lawn. This allows me to plan routes, allocate enough working time and provide a reliable service without customers having to find someone every time their lawn needs cutting.

The price remains consistent throughout the season because the amount of work required doesn't remain consistent.

During periods of slower growth, a lawn may be relatively quick to maintain. At other points in the season, particularly during strong spring growth and following periods of summer rain, the exact same lawn can take considerably longer.

As we move towards autumn, increased rainfall combined with ground that is still relatively warm can also produce very fast, thick growth. Wetter and heavier grass takes longer to cut, equipment has to work harder, and additional clearing and tidying can be required.

We don't increase the price when your grass grows faster or takes considerably longer to cut.

Instead, the quieter and quicker visits help balance the more labour-intensive visits throughout the season.

That's what allows us to offer one predictable regular price.

Why Regular Visits Matter

This model only works when the service remains regular.

I completely understand why someone may look at their lawn during a particularly dry spell and think, "It doesn't really need cutting this week."

For an ad-hoc gardener, cancelling that individual cut might not matter.

For a scheduled maintenance round, however, repeated skips have a much bigger impact.

The capacity for that property has already been reserved within my working week. It is extremely difficult to replace a cancelled regular visit with another customer for one isolated cut, while I still need to retain enough capacity for the original property when growth accelerates again.

This year we've experienced significantly more requested skips than usual during the slower-growing periods.

At times, I've been able to combine what would normally represent two weeks of scheduled grass cutting into approximately a morning's work.

When growth accelerates again, the opposite happens. The same round can require significantly more time and, during the busiest periods, can regularly occupy around two working days each week.

Normally, the quicker visits help offset those demanding periods.

When a significant proportion of those quieter visits are skipped, unfortunately that balance disappears.

Why I Can't Simply Add More Grass-Cutting Days

My available working time is extremely limited.

Grass cutting is only one part of OutServe. Alongside lawn maintenance, I provide regular window cleaning, gutter clearing, exterior cleaning and other property-maintenance services.

I deliberately limit the number of customers I take on because I would rather provide a smaller, dependable and professional service than continually take on more work and become unreliable.

Reliability is extremely important to me.

Customers should be able to expect communication, regular scheduling and a service provider who actually turns up.

That requires careful control of the amount of work I commit to.

OutServe Is About More Than Cutting Grass

The price of a professional service also represents more than the minutes spent physically cutting a lawn.

I continue to invest in professional equipment, appropriate insurance, communication systems and the infrastructure needed to operate OutServe properly.

I've also chosen to invest in equipment that I hope I'll never need.

Our vehicles carry First Aid equipment, LifeVac choking devices and AED defibrillators, available should someone in the community ever need emergency assistance.

Supporting our local communities and grassroots organisations is something I want to continue developing as OutServe grows.

These things aren't necessary to simply turn up with a lawnmower and cut someone's grass.

They're choices I've made because I want OutServe to represent a higher standard of local service.

What Is Changing?

Following a review of the grass-cutting round, unfortunately some properties will be removed from the regular schedule where the frequency of skips means I can no longer sustainably reserve the capacity required.

For some customers who have had three or more skipped visits this season, I am able to retain their place, but their regular grass-cutting price will increase by £5 per visit from 31st August 2026.

Rather than applying a blanket increase to every grass-cutting customer, I believe this is a fairer way of restructuring the service.

Customers who have maintained their regular schedule have helped the seasonal model work as intended, and I don't believe they should automatically face an increase because other parts of the round have become unsustainable.

Looking Ahead

The purpose of these changes isn't simply to increase prices.

In fact, I'm deliberately making the round smaller.

I want to build a core grass-cutting round made up of customers who genuinely want regular seasonal lawn maintenance and understand that their scheduled place is reserved throughout the season.

That allows me to plan properly, keep prices as consistent as possible and, most importantly, continue providing the level of reliability I want associated with OutServe.

I completely understand that this type of service won't suit everybody.

Some people would prefer to arrange a grass cut only when they feel their lawn needs one, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. An ad-hoc gardening service may simply be better suited to those requirements.

OutServe's regular service, however, is designed for customers who want their lawn consistently maintained throughout the growing season without having to think about arranging each individual visit.

Thank You

I genuinely appreciate every customer who has supported OutServe and particularly those who have maintained their regular visits throughout the season.

Running a small local business sometimes means making difficult decisions to protect the quality and reliability of the service in the long term.

I'd much rather make those changes now than continue growing the round beyond what I can reliably manage or compromise the standard of service customers have come to expect.

Thank you for your continued support and understanding.

Jordan @ OutServe
