OutServe Community Update: LifeVac Now On Every Van – Supporting Our Community When It Matters Most

At OutServe, our goal has always been bigger than just cleaning windows.

We want to be visible, approachable, and genuinely helpful within the communities we serve. Whether that’s through reliable service, a friendly chat, or being there in an emergency — we believe a service provider should care, turn up, and stay in touch in every sense of the words.


That’s why we’ve taken another step forward.


LifeVac Now Available On Our Vans

Alongside our AEDs and first aid kits, we’ve now added a LifeVac anti-choking device to our vans.

This equipment is not just for customers — it’s for anyone in the community who may need it in an emergency.

What Is a LifeVac?

A LifeVac is a non-invasive, suction-based airway clearance device designed to remove an obstruction when someone is choking.

It works by:

  • Creating suction to dislodge food or an object

  • Helping clear the airway when traditional methods aren’t working

  • Being simple to use in high-pressure situations

It’s particularly valuable in situations where:

  • Back blows and abdominal thrusts haven’t worked

  • The person has become unconscious

  • The rescuer is unable to perform physical techniques effectively


Why This Matters

Choking can happen to anyone:

  • Children

  • Elderly people

  • Adults eating normally

And when it happens, every second counts.

By having LifeVac, AEDs, and first aid equipment on our vans, our aim is simple:

👉 To provide fast access to life-saving support within the community

As OutServe grows, so does that coverage — more vans means more equipment available across more areas.


Recognising the Signs of Choking

Knowing what to look for is critical.

Mild Choking (Partial Blockage)

  • Coughing forcefully

  • Able to speak or breathe

  • Signs of distress

👉 In this case, encourage them to keep coughing — this is the body’s natural way of clearing the airway.

Severe Choking (Full Blockage)

  • Unable to speak, cough, or breathe

  • Silent gasping

  • Hands clutching throat

  • Turning blue (lips/face)

  • Panic or collapse

👉 This is a medical emergency and requires immediate action.


What To Do If Someone Is Choking (Without LifeVac)

Step 1 – Call for Help

  • Shout for assistance

  • Call 999 if the blockage doesn’t clear quickly

Step 2 – Back Blows

  • Stand behind them

  • Lean them forward

  • Deliver up to 5 firm blows between the shoulder blades

Step 3 – Abdominal Thrusts (Heimlich Manoeuvre)

  • Stand behind them

  • Place your hands just above the belly button

  • Pull sharply inward and upward

  • Perform up to 5 thrusts

👉 Alternate between 5 back blows and 5 thrusts until:

  • The blockage clears

  • Or emergency services arrive

If They Become Unconscious

  • Carefully lower them to the ground

  • Call 999 immediately (if not already done)

  • Begin CPR if trained


Using LifeVac in an Emergency

If standard methods don’t work, this is where LifeVac can be used.


How It Helps

  • Provides suction to remove the obstruction

  • Can be used on adults and children (with correct mask)

  • Simple, quick, and effective when time is critical

Basic Use Steps

  1. Place the mask securely over the mouth and nose

  2. Push down to create a seal

  3. Pull up sharply to create suction

Repeat as needed until the airway clears.


What If You’re Choking Alone?

This is something many people don’t think about — but it’s important.


Without LifeVac:

  • Try to cough forcefully

  • Use a chair or hard surface to perform self abdominal thrusts

  • Call emergency services if possible

With LifeVac:

  • The device can be used independently

  • Follow the same push-and-pull method

  • Designed specifically for situations where no one else is present
